Week 2 - Item 3 Avatar Complete!

Completing the avatar was not as much fun as I thought. I am frustrated with our McAfee Protection. Continually it would block pictures so it took some guess work to complete. I also would have liked a searchable feature instead of looking at each picture. It was frustrating at times to get everything to work as I wanted it to work but with perseverance and more time than it should have taken I have an avatar and even exported it.

One of the things I feel I learned from the experience is that all of this was foreign to me but to others it would be very easy. I have to remember the feeling of frustration as I am helping students use Power Library or Destiny. They are feeling the same frustration that I felt in making and exporting an avatar. It is new, it is foreign, and they may not quite see the point.

It is always good to put yourself in the patron's place and make sure that while you are providing library information that they are not hearing library babble. I will need to listen to myself with different ears this week.

Week 1 More Life Long Learning

I worked on a post Monday evening, posted it and then took it off and put it in the draft area. What fun to try how to figure out that the post was still in existence somewhere. I started over then eventually found it in the Draft box. Finding the way to get it back to editing format was challenging as well.

I do have to say that I do not understand the fun or purpose of blogging in educational settings. Hopefully I will be able to make connections to the library and find it useful. I really want to play with the Avatar. Now that looks fun!

Week 1 - Item 1 and 2 - Life Long Learning

"The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn." Alvin Toffler, Futurist

For a long time the above quote has been a favorite. After teaching for 26 years I have learned, unlearned, and relearned many aspects of education, technology, and life in general. The philosophy Toffler espouses ties into life long learning. After listening and viewing the 7 1/2 Habits of Life Long Learners I view my best habit as setting the goal. Usually the goal is what drives me to accomplish something. I know what I want to do and work toward that goal.

I found it interesting in Habit 5 when they talked of creating your own learning toolbox. Doing this is something that seems to naturally happen but I never really thought about it consciously before.

The habit I need to work on most is Habit 7 1/2. Play is not my best aspect in professional or personal life. Time and the amount of other tasks usually seems to be the factor to limit play. I will work on playing with the activities for the next few weeks.

Interesting. I just found that I can access this at school.
